Managing priorities for copywriters

Managing priorities for everyone?

An exploration more than a solution because I don’t know the answer. Before you get too excited.

priorities

Only I don’t have a cat…

Replace the word cat  with dogs, horses, chickens and family, in no particular order. They are my priorities in two ways.

First, they have to be fed.  I can’t think to myself, ‘Oh, I’m a bit busy today. Perhaps I’ll put that task off until the end of the week.’

Second, more ontologically, providing food for the animals (including my family) is my life, the reason I leap out of bed in the mornings and the reason I work.

Managing priorities as a copywriter, now I’ve established my raison d’etre? Not quite so easy to delineate.

Right – so here’s one school of thought:

“Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.”
― Stephen R. Covey

Good old Highly Effective Stephen Covey and his “Habits of Seven People” – wasn’t that what it was called? (I’m not one of the seven)

First…know what goes in which box. It always confuses me.

priorities

Yep…difficult managing priorities when I can’t tell the difference between urgent and important.

But look at this:

“The mark of a great man is one who knows when to set aside the important things in order to accomplish the vital ones.”
― Brandon SandersonThe Alloy of Law

Now I really AM confused.

In the course of my research, I got side-tracked, surprise surprise. I think this should go into the ‘Not urgent and not important’ box. Ah, a glimmer of insight…

I came across an EXTRAORDINARY site called “Provocative Manners – The Simple Life: Balancing Stress and Priorities.”  (Google it yourself if you consider it either urgent or important.)

They had a few suggestions about managing priorities. Here is number eight: (Number EIGHT, mark you.)

8.  Make your husband feel like a man.  Keep him as your top priority and he will do the same for you!

Is that urgent or important? I suppose it depends on your point of view.

Oh, I give up.

Part 2 tomorrow.
